What does Treloar’s do?

Treloar’s is a school and college for physically disabled young people providing integrated education, therapy, medical and care support to both day and residential students. We offer day placements to primary age students; day, short stay and weekly boarding to students aged 11-16; and day, weekly and termly boarding to students in the College.

Who does Treloar’s provide for?

In our primary school, secondary school and college we provide education to physically disabled young people, with complex needs, from 4-25 years of age. We have a wide range of different pathways, depending on their aim of placement, and every programme is highly bespoke.  Some students will acquire the skills and qualifications needed for employment or higher education, others may follow a sensory and integrated pathway. All will have a focus on maximising independence and preparing for life after Treloar’s.

How can I start engaging with Treloar’s?

Contact us at admissions@treloar.org.uk to discuss a visit and to learn more about what Treloar’s can offer. A placement at Treloar’s will usually start in September, but we do take students throughout the year. It is important that contact is made with the admissions team as soon as a placement is being considered as it can take a considerable length of time to secure a placement

How are decisions made about who can come to Treloar’s?

The decision about a placement at Treloar’s is usually made with the parents/carers and student on the basis of an assessment carried out by our multi-disciplinary admissions team. Nearly all of our students are funded as part of an agreement with their local authority, although a very small number are privately funded. The decisions on funding links to the student’s Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).

How does Treloar’s know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person needs extra help?

After a student joins Treloar’s, their multi-disciplinary team undertake regular reviews of their needs throughout the year. Parents/carers and others who support the student have lots of opportunity to meet the team working with them. Any change in needs is identified as part of this process and we will work to implement and, where possible, seek additional funding for those needs if appropriate.

Regular review

We have a number of ways in which we review student progress throughout the year. These include:

  • Annual Review meetings
  • Parents’ Days
  • Updated Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
  • Student reports
  • End of year report
  • Leavers reports

How will Early Year’s specialist staff support my child/young person?

Treloar’s School Early Year education is DfE/OFSTED approved and offers education to young people with complex disabilities and learning difficulties. Early Years education is available on a non-residential basis and those enrolled will have access to a comprehensive range of professional staff, services and facilities in addition to dedicated Early Years specialist support.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s/young person’s needs?

Treloar’s enables physically disabled students to access the curriculum by providing fully accessible facilities and equipment, adjusting the timetable and lessons to meet learning and physical care needs and by providing the appropriate technology and adaptations to encourage independence.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child/young person’s learning?

At Treloar’s, every student will have an individual programme which integrates their education, independence skills, therapy and other support. These will be delivered holistically for each individual student working with their own Multi-Disciplinary Team.

We have a comprehensive system of annual reports and reviews to provide real time information on a young person’s curriculum progress and achievements against their targets and EHCP outcomes.

Our Parents’ Association also offers training and information days.

Each member of our staff has students’ well-being at the centre of their role supported by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals on-site.

Every student has a Multi-Disciplinary Team consisting of the following staff:

  • Tutors
  • Student progress co-ordinator
  • Support assistants
  • Residential team leader
  • Physiotherapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Speech & language therapist

In addition many students will be involved with other specialist staff such as:

  • House nurses
  • Specialist tutors
  • Visual and multi sensory impairment advisors
  • Assistive technologists
  • Educational psychologists

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) had or are having?

A full programme of mandatory training is in place for all staff covering all the essential skills for their roles. Teaching staff are all fully qualified and hold a range of specialist qualifications. Care and class support staff have an appropriate Level 3 qualification or are working towards achieving this.

There is also an extensive programme of specialist qualifications and training available which enables all staff to be more effective in working in the student focussed multi-disciplinary manner, which the Treloar’s approach requires.

How will Treloar’s prepare and support my child/young person to join or transfer to the next stage of life?

We work closely with both other settings  and families to ensure that students are supported fully in their move to Treloar’s. After which we put the development of independence and placement goals as a key priority for our students. As students approach transition points both within Treloar’s and as they prepare to leave us our Transition Team work closely to ensure the success of their next steps in life.

How are Treloar’s resources allocated and matched to children’s/young/people’s special educational needs and how is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Our assessment process matches needs to resource allocation within Treloar’s and the on-going review by internal teams allows flexibility to meet changing or urgent needs. In addition to standard funding allocations Treloar’s, as a charity, has an active fundraising team which raises additional funds for elements such as assistive technology.

How are parents involved?

Parents/carers are involved in the whole process from assessment as appropriate, through their time at Treloar’s and into transition to their future placement. Our approach includes:

  • Parents’ coffee mornings
  • Termly drop in sessions providing an opportunity to talk to other parents with advice and support offered by Treloar’s PTA.
