Making reading accessible

Community

Treloar School has been exploring how to further support students' access during class reading sessions.

Treloar's students and staff during a whole class reading session in the classroom during World Book Day. Students and staff are dressed up as book characters.

At Treloar's, we promote regular whole class and group reading sessions as they focus on improving reading and comprehension skills and give students opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills. By all students having access to text, this enables them to follow words and images as well as develop visual tracking skills:

  • the ability to hold eyes steady on a target
  • the ability of eyes to make accurate jumps as we change targets
  • the ability of eyes to follow moving targets

We are pushing the boundaries further with the support of technology. Groups have been trialling the use of a class iPad stand, a Teams meeting and students' iPads to increase full access for all students.

This was celebrated across the school during our World Book Day celebrations.

A whole class reading session.
