Last week, we joined the Education Business awards ceremony in London, following the announcement that our nomination for SEN PE provision was shortlisted. Whilst we did not win we are incredibly proud of our ongoing achievements.
PE and sport continue to serve as significant motivators for students at Treloar’s. We are committed to developing individualised curriculum pathways and extracurricular sports activities for each student, fostering a ‘can do’ outlook. The sense of well-being and achievement that students gain through the encouragement and support of our highly trained PE and swimming staff allows them to fulfil their potential. This brings us immense pride.
Ofsted has acknowledged Treloar's efforts, stating: “PE, including physical well-being, is taught well and takes into consideration very sharply the individual needs of pupils across the school. Elements of the PE and Physical Well-being curriculum, including swimming, are exemplary and are being shared with other schools.”
Treloar's core programme includes:
- An Adapted Games Curriculum: Specially designed equipment and modified rules tailored to individual needs. Collaboration with Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy departments has led to the development of invasion and playground games. These help students acquire fundamental movement skills, enhancing their ability to perform everyday life tasks such as dressing and posture management, while also building sporting skills in recognised games. Participation in these games promotes confident decision-making, strategic thinking and personal movement patterns.
- Fitness Activities: Designed to help students create Personal Programmes (PP). By learning about body systems and participating in various circuits, students develop their preferred and chosen exercise routines. This empowers them to take ownership of their mobility and fosters a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. One of our most popular initiatives has been the Boxercise Circuit.
As part of Treloar's extracurricular programme, students have access to recognised disability sports. Through Treloar's Boccia programme, students have progressed to national and international Paralympic levels. Treloar's also provides recreational activities, ensuring that all students, from sensory learners to those in Level 2 pathways, can find a sport they enjoy and continue after leaving school. Notably, participation in Dance Live competition last year was a rewarding experience for both students and staff at Treloar's. Furthermore, Treloar's was also honoured to receive the Association for Physical Education (afPE) Quality Mark with distinction.
Our swimming sessions are adapted to meet the diverse needs and motivations of our complex student body. Our PE and Physiotherapy Teams have developed and trialed our very own Treloar Swim Levels which we hope to share with other settings
Treloar's successful Disability Sports Day has been expanded to include local cluster schools and partnerships with Alton College, providing Level 3 students with coaching opportunities at Treloar’s. Additionally, Treloar's has initiated inclusive staff training for mainstream settings, aimed at enabling other young disabled sports performers outside of Treloar to achieve their potential. Freya, Leader of Learning said:
"Through these initiatives, we continue to inspire and empower our students, promoting inclusion and excellence in physical education and sports."
