Exploring the idea of floatation with Eggar's School

Following a request from Will Redfearn, STEM teacher at Eggar's School in Alton, to use our swimming pool, students from both Eggar's and Treloar’s enjoyed a fun afternoon session exploring the idea of floatation in regard to boats. 

Students form Eggar's have entered a national competitionthe QinetiQ Maritime Schools’ Powerboat Challenge 2024. The aim of the competition is to design and build a remote-control powerboat to race against other schools.

The Eggar’s students came to Treloar’s to discuss how they had designed prototypes and from those built a working model to race on the day. Eggar's students were keen to chat about all the design features and potential problems they encountered on the way before setting sail on their maiden voyage in Treloar’s swimming pool. The students loved testing the boat for speed and manoeuvrability in the pool. We hope their experience at Treloar’s will give them the winning edge in the competition on Friday, 15 November.

The launch was a great success and some of our Treloar School students were invited to join in and helm the boat themselves. Before the arrival of the Eggar's students, Treloar's Swim Squad had been discussing floatation and how to build their own boat/prototype from paper before much fun was had testing (or should we say trying to sink) each other’s boats.

This great afternoon was not only fun and informative, but has also made more links with our friends from Eggar's possible, potentially leading to a collaboration between the schools to run a ‘Boat Building Club’ moving forward.

We wish our friends from Eggar's much success on Friday and look forward to hearing all about the competition.
