Earlier this month, Treloar College student Thomas attended the Action Duchenne Annual Conference, alongside Head of Admissions, Emma Simmonds and Progress and Transition Manager, Maria Sherwood.
Thomas co-presented at the Conference and spoke about his journey to becoming a student at Treloar College.
The Action Duchenne conference brings together families, patient experts, clinicians, healthcare professionals, industry and equipment providers. The theme was ‘educating, supporting and empowering’ a theme that very much mirrors the Treloar’s mission.
Thomas spoke to many of the conference delegates around the challenges he faced, getting the right educational placement and how he overcame the barriers. Thomas did a fantastic job and answered questions confidently. He also had the opportunity to meet Harry Hill, Patron of Action Duchenne.
Treloar's and Action Duchenne have formed a positive partnership and over the past year Treloar's has delivered a variety of sessions as part of the YES I CAN initiative that empowers young people aged 14-25, living with Duchenne focusing on transition. Some representatives from our Physiotherapy team attended the International Conference, gaining some valuable insight into the latest research and developments. Both charities have a shared ethos of supporting young people living with Duchenne and we hope to continue to develop this collaboration with such an important charity.
