Treloar’s has a dedicated team of over 850 staff and volunteers. Every single person is vital in helping our students to achieve their goals and prepare for the best life beyond Treloar’s.

In the last School Ofsted report, it was highlighted that "staff are totally dedicated to their work to break down barriers and to make pupils feel that more is possible in their own lives." One of those people is Kim Smith, Treloar's Sports Coach and Event Leader.

How it all started

I started my journey at Treloar’s in 2003. Prior to that, I was a childminder, additional needs foster carer and respite provider. I knew that I wanted to work with young people with disabilities so I applied to Treloar’s. I was successful and was offered a job the very same day as an LSA (now known as SSAs). When I arrived for my first day, I was asked what lessons would suit me best. I replied PE and Sport. Since then, my job role has evolved to Sports Coach and Event Leader as over the years, I have gained lots of experience coaching various disability sports.

Kim and Boccia

My involvement with Boccia started immediately as I was timetabled to work on the Boccia Squad PPD session. I was to help out as a ramp assistant and was soon going to external competitions. My passion for Boccia grew and I later became an England coach.

Boccia successes

Many of our students over the years have gone on to represent England and GB. We have produced many Paralympians. David Smith OBE being the most famous.

Treloar’s at Paralympics

This year, there were 4 former Treloar’s students representing GB at the Paris Games which I’m sure will inspire the next generation of students.

Working at Treloar’s

What do I love about my job? I love everything about it! Everyday is different and the students amaze me every single day with their hard work and determination. Sport is very important for each and every student here at Treloar’s as it is in every other school. Sport provides our students with the sense of achievement, belonging and well-being. Being a member of the Swim Squad and Boccia Squad is a huge privilege and our students always work hard and always make me so very proud.
